I recommend this book. It is a different take on the Red Riding Hood story where the wolves are werewolves and red riding hood comes in the form of two sisters battle ready sisters who kick werewolf butt. It was a good read which I finished in two days. It is a stand-alone book with no sequel so you can enjoy it not have to worry about being left with a cliff-hanger.
Supernatural Presence: Werewolves (called Fenris in this book) Setting: First the small hometown of Ellison, Georgia and then Atlanta, Georgia
Scarlett & Rosie March: When they were younger, a werewolf attacked them at their home. It brutally killed their grandmother and went after the girls who were hiding in their grandmother's bedroom. Scarlett, determined to protect her younger sister Rosie, fights and kills the wolf. The battle loses Scarlett her eye and leaves her with scars from where the wolf mauled and clawed her. This causes Scarlett to become obsessed with hunting down and killing every last Fenris (she sees this as her duty since she knows they exist; she must protect the innocent people who are in the dark). Rosie wants a life outside of hunting, but since she owes her sister her life, she feels living a life dedicated to hunting with her sister is the only way to repay her for her sacrifice.
Silas Reynolds: A woodsman and longtime/childhood friend to the girls and Scarlett's best/only friend. He has a bunch of siblings who are mad at him and his uncle Jacob because Silas' dad gave all the inheritance to the two of them before going senile. He used to be Scarlett's hunting partner before taking a break and going to California to see what it's like to live a "normal life."
Oma March: Scarlett & Rosie's grandmother who raised them until her untimely death.
Pa Reynolds: Silas' father, who has a severe case of Alzheimer's and is in an elderly home. He is also a woodsman and the closest thing they have to an expert on Fenris.
Fenris: Werewolves: when someone is turned they lose their soul and hunt people whom they tear apart and eat.
I know the key players, tell me what happens!:
Silas returns home to find the March sisters (Scarlett & Rosie) hunting Fenris on the regular because there is an unexplained influx of them in the area. He and Rosie are attracted to one another and find they share the same longing to do something other than hunting although Rosie feels she has no choice, she owes her sister her life and can't imagine abandoning her or the hunt. After a few wolfy encounters, they discover that the increased numbers is due to the emergence of a "potential" (define potential: someone who can be changed into a werewolf) who is in his "moonphase" (define moonphase: the time before the next full moon; this is the only time when a potential can be turned into a werewolf). All three know they cannot allow the potential to be found and changed and must kill as many wolves as they can. They decide to go to Atlanta because it is the Fenris' headquarters for that area and the concentration will allow them to kill more wolves to stop them from finding the potential.
During the 1-2 months they are there, they find the werewolves in town are stronger and harder to lure so they focus on trying to find the potential. Scarlett is frustrated, feeling useless/helpless and obsesses even more on finding the potential. Rosie and Silas get close and spend a lot of time together as a couple when Scarlett is not around. Silas convinces Rosie to take classes at the community center to be "normal" for about an hour a week. They are all trying to discover what makes a potential different, what is the determining factor that makes them able to turn? The only thing they have to go on is that each Fenris they've talked to was turned after their birthday on a 7th year (14th, 21st, 28th, etc. birthday). While Rosie is at a Tango class, she is paired with a young man who happens to be a Fenris and attacks her even though its daytime and there are people all around. In the aftermath, his father (who is either unaware or in denial think his son is going crazy) reveals that he has 6 older brothers as does his son, making his son the seventh son of a seventh son (previously they came across a myth that the seventh son of a seventh son is cursed). She runs home to tell the other two and has to reveal to Scarlett that she's been lying to her by keeping the classes a secret. Shortly after, Scarlett comes home and catches Rosie and Silas hugging and kissing. She feels betrayed, yells at them and runs away. While she is living the homeless life, refusing to go home, she visits Pa Reynolds who mistakes her for his dead wife. He reveals that Silas isn't his sixth son but the seventh. His youngest brother is actually his first son whom he had with his wife out of wedlock when they were younger which makes Silas the seventh son of a seventh son and this is the first full moon after his 21st birthday making him the potential they'd been searching for the whole time. While Scarlett runs back home to warn Rosie and Silas, the wolves kidnap Rosie (they were all previously identified when some wolves they were fighting escaped) and propose a trade: Rosie for Silas. As Scarlett and Silas head out for the trade, they find Rosie who has escaped and are immediately surrounded by wolves. They fight and kill all but the alpha who is about to kill Scarlett when Silas saves her and is bitten. They kill the alpha and Silas asks Scarlett to kill him before he loses his soul and attacks them. As she is about to swing her hatchet, the church bells chime midnight (the wolves needed to change him by like 11:20p or 11:40p I think) which means the bite is too late to change him and he is safe for another 7 years.
In the end, Scarlett who is in love with the hunt, stays in Atlanta where she can do the most damage to the Fenris population and Rosie and Silas are in love and traveling the world.
